Add oats, egg, and the amount of water or milk directed on package (usually about 1 3/4 cup milk or water). Once the oatmeal is done, remove from heat, and stir in vanilla and butter. For an extra creamy consistency, especially when using steel cut oats, run an immersion blender around the pot.
