Vanilla Custard Oatmeal

Ingredients

  • 1 cup old fashioned rolled oats or steel cut oats
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional)
  • Chopped dates, walnuts, brown sugar, for serving

Instructions

Add oats, egg, and the amount of water or milk directed on package (usually about 1 3/4 cup milk or water).

Once the oatmeal is done, remove from heat, and stir in vanilla and butter.

For an extra creamy consistency, especially when using steel cut oats, run an immersion blender around the pot.

Top with brown sugar, a chopped date or raisins, toasted walnuts, brown sugar, and a drizzle of cold milk.
